about

The Mike Allemana Organ Trio celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut album by releasing both albums in one collection. In 2000, we released The Mike Allemana Organ Trio on the TuConn label, a small Chicago label that was run by singer, composer, and impresario Tuey Connell. That same year, Tuey funded a session for our second album, Lin’s Holiday, produced by bassist Dennis Carroll and recorded by legendary engineer David Baker. To celebrate 20 years since our first recordings, we offer our complete studio recordings with a bonus live performance that was sponsored in 2011 by Chicagoland jazz radio, WDCB.

Our first album, The Mike Allemana Organ Trio, was recorded at Airwaves Studios in March of 1999 which used to be on Roscoe Street in the heart of Roscoe Village. The engineer was Bundy Brown, who engineered the classic albums of the legendary band Tortoise. The studio did not own a Hammond B-3, so we rented from Faust Organ, recommended by Dave Jemilo, owner of the Green Mill. Nancy Faust. the CEO, called me to confirm the organ rental, and I realized I was speaking with THE Nanny Faust who was the organist at Comiskey Park for the White Sox. Being a lifelong White Sox fan, I was a little star stuck and told her so. She was so nice and provided a wonderful instrument. My good buddy Brett Simons, amazing bass player, edited this session and Dan Burton at Colossal Mastering mastered the session. The CD cover was taken from a photo shoot by Todd Winters (www.toddwintersphoto.com) who photographed us at the now defunct California Clipper before the club had opened.

Our second album, Lin’s Holliday, was recorded at Midwest Digital, a studio that was run out of a garage in the Pilsen neighborhood. Tuey Connell hired the legendary David Baker, who recorded Shirley Horn and other great jazz musicians. Baker, a truly amazing engineer, set us up in the studio utilizing techniques he learned from Rudy Van Gelder, including removing the back from the Hammond B-3 and clipping wires to soldered components of the organ to produce a direct sound that he combined with mics on the Leslie speakers. Baker then recorded us direct to two-track reel-to-reel tape and made two edits by using a razor blade and plastic tape to re-connect the magnetic tape. It was a true old school session. Dennis Carroll produced the album, and provided us with lots of spontaneous ideas to help make my arrangements and our playing more concise and spontaneous. Dan Stout, who mastered several sessions for Premonition Records, including Von Freeman’s 2002 release The Improvisor, mastered this session. The CD cover was taken from a photo shoot by Ben Chandler. This album is dedicated to the memory of David Baker who sadly passed away in his sleep in 2004 at age 58.

Included with our two albums as a special bonus is a concert we performed in 2011 for WDCB at Shannon's Irish Pub in downtown Glen Ellyn. We hope you enjoy this 20-year anniversary collection. Please visit www.mikeallemana.com for information on upcoming livestreams and performances.
